New on DVD this month is the Disney DVD Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky. In this full-length cartoon, Jake and his Never Land Pirate pals--Izzy, Cubby, and Skully the parrot (who is voiced by David Arquette of the Scream movies and "I married Courteney Cox" fame)-- are challenged to a race by the despicable Captain Hook. If Jake and his friends lose, they must turn over their ship, the Buccaneer or "Bucky", to Captain Hook.

Of course, Captain Hook never plays fair, so he manages to win the race by cheating. Jake and his Pirate pals are devastated. Children watching are going to experience the loss of a friend right along with them. It would provide a good opportunity to talk about feelings of sadness, and how it feels to have a best friend go away. Jake, Izzy, Cubby, and Skully call upon the one and only Peter Pan to help them win Bucky back. They must face a dangerous island in order to save their friend, proving that it's easy to do anything in order to save a dear friend.

The DVD is filled with great songs in the Jake and the Never Land Pirates "Pirate Rock" style. Kids will enjoy rocking out to short ditties about the rules of the race, swoon to the crooning of Jake's "How can we say goodbye" song, and dance with joy to the "Best Friend Bucky" song and reprise. Sharky and Bones make their appearances singing the "Belay" song at the end too. In fact, one of the bonus features is a "Pirate-oke", a karaoke sing along featuring some of the greatest Sharky and Bones songs from the series. Kids will love to jam with Sharky and Bones, and they can work on their reading skills following the words on the screen.

The DVD also includes four bonus episodes of the show, which airs on Disney and Disney Junior channels. Each bonus episode includes two stories, so your kids will get a ton of Jake for their Bucky... I mean buck! The disc also includes a digital copy, to load onto various portable electronic devices, so your kids can "grab them and go" just like his pirate pals. However, the most fun bonus that comes with every DVD is an inflatable pirate sword just like Jake's. As a parent, I've been jabbed and bopped with that sword more times than I can count already; even the cat loves dragging it around. I will admit, I'm actually rather surprised with how durable it is, and with how well it holds air for being blown up with a straw. It's definitely one bonus the folks at Disney really thought through!

Parents will surely enjoy the fun Pirate Rock segments, and kids will learn what it means to be a good friend and work as a team to get where they want to go or solve a problem. It's a great way to revisit some of Disney's classic characters like Captain Hook and Peter Pan in a new way that is fun and peppy, which kids will surely treasure. No pun intended, of course.
